I hope you’ve all been enjoying the summer months and exploring those far off places and hidden gems closer to home. My name is Alex, I blog over at passionfruitandprunes. I’m lucky enough to call the wonderful city of Austin, Texas my home and I’m thrilled to share a few of my favorite spots to cool off in and around my city. After all, summer in Texas doesn’t seem to end so there is still plenty of time to lather up in sunscreen and hit those summer hot spots.
Number one on the list and my absolute favorite swimming hole to date. You would not think this sunken grotto with a 50 ft waterfall and crystal clear turquoise waters is only 35 minutes outside of Austin. The water is a little chilly but splashing around under the waterfall and watching the wildlife around this natural reserve makes it all worth it!
A local favorite for many years, Barton Springs is wonderful all year round. The natural spring maintains its 68 degree (20 °C) temperatures throughout winter and summer making it a popular spot for swimming long after the summer heat has passed. It gets crowded over the summer so it’s best to get there before 10 a.m. if possible.
Lake Austin is great for renting a boat and enjoying a day on the lake or eating/drinking at one of the restaurants at Oyster Landing or just bringing a picnic and sipping a glass of wine from the jetty.
Good ole’ fashioned swimming pool
Honestly, Austin is so stinkin’ hot in the summer that sometimes nothing beats cooling off in a good old fashioned swimming pool. Lots of Austin hotels offer day passes to their pools, so bring a towel, order a cocktail, lather up in sunscreen and enjoy the Texas heat!
I hope you all enjoyed your summer as much as I did!
